B2.1 – English for Adults – It’s In The Bag

The expression “the whole nine yards” is an idiom in English that means: “everything possible” or “the full amount.” It is used when you want to show full effort or commitment or to emphasize completeness.

“It’s In The Bag” is our B2.1 course, the first sublevel of B2 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The expression refers to something that is certain to happen or be achieved, especially a success or victory.

The course is designed for adults who have completed B1 or are ready for an upper-intermediate challenge, aiming to develop greater fluency, accuracy, and complexity in their communication, both spoken and written.

Who is it for?

  • Adults who have completed B1.2 or are at an intermediate level.
  • Learners who want to communicate effectively and naturally in social, academic, and work-related contexts.
  • Those aiming to progress toward full B2 proficiency and possibly prepare for official exams (e.g., Cambridge B2 First).

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Speak more confidently and naturally in discussions, debates, and social interactions.
  • Express opinions, arguments, and explanations with more complex language.
  • Understand the main ideas and details of longer spoken and written texts on various topics.
  • Use a wider range of structures for narration, speculation, and persuasion.
  • Write clear, connected texts such as reports, essays, and opinion articles.
  • Manage communication breakdowns using strategies to clarify and reformulate.

Topics & Functions:

  • Personal growth and challenges: Discussing life decisions, opportunities, and overcoming obstacles.
  • Global issues: Talking about environmental, cultural, and social topics.
  • Work and education: Participating in discussions about professional development and study opportunities.
  • Travel and cultural exchange: Debating cultural differences, tourism, and globalization.
  • Media and technology: Evaluating the role of social media, online communication, and innovation.
  • Health and lifestyle: Discussing well-being, healthy living, and modern challenges.
  • Future perspectives: Speculating about future trends in society and personal life.

Grammar:

  • Advanced verb tenses: Past Perfect Simple & Continuous, Future Perfect, and review of B1 tenses.
  • Modal verbs for speculation and deduction (must have, might have, can’t have).
  • Passive voice (all common tenses).
  • Reported speech (expanded to include reporting verbs and indirect commands).
  • Conditionals: Mixed conditionals and review of 0–3 conditionals.
  • Relative and participle clauses for more complex sentence structures.
  • Advanced linking devices: in spite of, whereas, nonetheless, therefore.

Vocabulary:

  • Personal development and achievements.
  • Global issues and current events.
  • Media, communication, and technology.
  • Work, careers, and education.
  • Travel and intercultural communication.
  • Expressions for debates, agreement, and persuasion.
  • Phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions for everyday and academic use.

Skills Development:

  • Speaking: Debates, presentations, and discussions on complex topics; practicing negotiation and persuasion.
  • Listening: Understanding talks, interviews, and discussions on both familiar and abstract topics.
  • Reading: Articles, opinion pieces, and longer narrative or informative texts.
  • Writing: Well-structured essays, reports, opinion articles, and formal emails.

  • Friends and family: 10% per “new” student + 5% cumulative for each additional student, applicable for one term.
  • Unemployed people: 25% discount on any fee for 1 student throughout the entire course (with DARDE document).
  • University students: 20% discount on any fee for 1 student throughout the entire course.
