B1.1 – English for Adults – Keep Your Eye On The Prize

The expression “the whole nine yards” is an idiom in English that means: “everything possible” or “the full amount.” It is used when you want to show full effort or commitment or to emphasize completeness.
“Keep Your Eye On The Prize” is our B1.1 course, the first sublevel of B1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The expression refers to staying focused on your main goal or objective, despite distractions, challenges, or setbacks.
The course is designed for adults who have completed A2 or can already manage basic conversations and want to move toward independent communication in English, developing their ability to handle a wider range of real-life situations with more fluency and accuracy.
Who is it for?
- Adults who have completed A2.2 or communicate at a pre-intermediate level.
- Learners who want to communicate more effectively in work, travel, and social situations.
- Those aiming to progress toward full intermediate proficiency (B1).
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Speak more confidently on a variety of familiar topics, expressing opinions and preferences.
- Understand and use different past, present, and future tenses more accurately.
- Handle practical situations such as making arrangements, solving problems, and negotiating simple agreements.
- Understand the main points in clear standard speech on familiar topics (work, school, leisure, etc.).
- Read and comprehend simple articles, messages, and everyday texts.
- Write short connected texts such as emails, simple reports, and short opinion paragraphs.
Topics & Functions:
- Personal experiences: Talking about life changes, achievements, and memorable events.
- Travel and leisure: Planning trips, describing experiences, and discussing preferences.
- Work and study: Talking about responsibilities, goals, and giving/understanding instructions.
- Social life: Expressing opinions, making suggestions, agreeing/disagreeing politely.
- Health and lifestyle: Discussing habits, giving advice, and talking about routines.
- Shopping and services: Negotiating, complaining, and problem-solving.
- Future planning: Talking about ambitions, intentions, and predictions.
Grammar:
- Past Simple, Past Continuous & Present Perfect (review and expand).
- Future forms: will, going to, and present continuous for arrangements.
- First and Second Conditionals.
- Modal verbs for obligation, advice, and probability (must, should, might, may, could).
- Relative clauses (who, which, that).
- Linking words (although, however, in addition, so, because).
- Comparatives and superlatives (review with complex structures).

- Opinions, attitudes, and feelings.
- Health, fitness, and routines.
- Phrasal verbs for everyday contexts.
- Descriptive language for places, events, and people.
Skills Development:
- Speaking: Roleplays for discussions, negotiations, problem-solving, and sharing opinions.
- Listening: Understanding longer conversations, announcements, and audio recordings.
- Reading: Articles, stories, and everyday functional texts.
- Writing: Emails, connected paragraphs, short reports, and opinion pieces.
