A2.2 – English for Adults – Learn The Ropes

The expression “the whole nine yards” is an idiom in English that means: “everything possible” or “the full amount.” It is used when you want to show full effort or commitment or to emphasize completeness.
“Learn The Ropes” is our A2.2 course, the second sublevel of A2 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The expression refers to when someone is new to a role or situation and is getting familiar with how things work and to learning how to do a particular job or activity, especially its basic skills.
The course is designed for adults who have completed A2.1 or already communicate at a pre-intermediate level and want to gain greater confidence and accuracy in English, preparing for a smooth transition toward a B1 level.
Who is it for?
- Adults who have completed A2.1 or are at a pre-intermediate level.
- Learners who want to express themselves more clearly in social, travel, and work situations.
- Those aiming to strengthen their English before moving on to an intermediate (B1) course.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Speak more fluently in everyday conversations on familiar topics.
- Discuss past experiences, present routines, and future plans with improved accuracy.
- Handle more complex situations such as making complaints, asking for detailed information, or giving instructions.
- Understand and respond to longer conversations in shops, workplaces, and travel contexts.
- Expand their vocabulary to express opinions, feelings, and preferences more naturally.
- Write short, clear texts like personal emails, descriptions, and short opinion paragraphs.
Topics & Functions:
- Personal life: Talking about milestones, memories, and personal achievements.
- Travel and tourism: Planning trips, describing travel experiences, solving problems during travel.
- Work and study: Discussing routines, goals, and basic professional communication.
- Social life: Expressing opinions, agreeing/disagreeing politely, making suggestions.
- Health and wellbeing: Talking about healthy habits, giving advice, discussing simple problems.
- Shopping and services: Making returns, dealing with customer service situations.
- Future goals: Talking about ambitions and plans for the future.
Grammar:
- Past Simple & Present Perfect (talking about experiences and finished actions).
- Future forms: going to, will, and present continuous for arrangements.
- First conditional (if + will).
- Modal verbs (might, could, should, must).
- Comparatives and superlatives (review with more complex structures).
- Adverbs of frequency and manner.
- Linking words (although, however, therefore).
Vocabulary:
- Experiences and achievements.
- Travel and tourism (expanded).
- Education and work.
- Opinions, feelings, and preferences.
- Health, fitness, and lifestyle.
- Common phrasal verbs for daily life.
- Descriptive adjectives for people and places.
Skills Development:
- Speaking: Roleplays for problem-solving, giving opinions, making suggestions, and sharing experiences.
- Listening: Understanding longer conversations, audio messages, and announcements.
- Reading: Short articles, personal stories, and basic opinion texts.
- Writing: Personal emails, short opinion paragraphs, and simple narratives.

- Friends and family: 10% per “new” student + 5% cumulative for each additional student, applicable for one term.
- Unemployed people: 25% discount on any fee for 1 student throughout the entire course (with DARDE document).
- University students: 20% discount on any fee for 1 student throughout the entire course.
