B1.2 – English for Adults – Turn A Corner

The expression “the whole nine yards” is an idiom in English that means: “everything possible” or “the full amount.” It is used when you want to show full effort or commitment or to emphasize completeness.

“Turn A Corner” is our B1.2 course, the second sublevel of B1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The expression refers to leaving problems behind and moving toward a more positive stage, a point where the situation begins to improve.

The course is designed for adults who have completed B1.1 or are already at an intermediate level and want to refine their communication skills, preparing for full B1 mastery and paving the way toward a B2 level.

Who is it for?

  • Adults who have completed B1.1 or are at an intermediate level.
  • Learners who want to improve their fluency and accuracy for work, travel, and social interactions.
  • Those aiming to consolidate their English and prepare for advanced learning (B2).

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Speak with more fluency and accuracy on a wide range of everyday topics.
  • Understand and participate in longer conversations and discussions.
  • Use a wider range of vocabulary and structures to express opinions, arguments, and explanations.
  • Read and understand straightforward articles, reports, and narrative texts.
  • Write connected texts such as emails, descriptions, and opinion pieces with better structure and coherence.
  • Manage more complex situations like solving problems, making arrangements, and expressing opinions politely and effectively.

Topics & Functions:

  • Personal development: Talking about life goals, challenges, and achievements.
  • Travel and culture: Describing cultural experiences, comparing customs, and discussing travel stories.
  • Work and education: Debating responsibilities, professional goals, and future opportunities.
  • Social interactions: Agreeing and disagreeing, expressing opinions in depth, and making suggestions.
  • Lifestyle and society: Talking about habits, routines, and social issues.
  • Problem-solving: Handling complaints, negotiating solutions, and offering compromises.
  • Future planning: Discussing ambitions, dreams, and long-term plans.

Grammar:

  • Review and consolidation of B1 grammar: Past Simple, Past Continuous, Present Perfect (simple & continuous).
  • Future forms: will, going to, present continuous, and future perfect.
  • Second and Third Conditionals.
  • Modal verbs: deduction and speculation (must, might, could, can’t).
  • Reported speech (statements and questions).
  • Passive voice (basic forms).
  • Advanced linking words: although, in spite of, whereas, therefore.

Vocabulary:

  • Personal growth and achievements.
  • Travel, culture, and traditions.
  • Work, studies, and career aspirations.
  • Opinions, emotions, and attitudes.
  • Social issues and lifestyle.
  • Common phrasal verbs and collocations.
  • Descriptive and comparative language for discussions.

Skills Development:

  • Speaking: Roleplays for debates, negotiations, sharing opinions, and problem-solving.
  • Listening: Understanding longer conversations, interviews, and audio clips on familiar topics.
  • Reading: Articles, short reports, and opinion texts.
  • Writing: Well-structured emails, opinion essays, and descriptive texts.
